Atticall
Atticall village and townland
is in the Parish of Kilkeel, Barony of Moume Western Half, Co. Down.
It is situated four miles north of the fishing port of Kilkeel in the
shadow of the Moume Mountains.
At various times in the past the name Atticall was recorded as Anty
Caell, Antecall. The name probaly has its origins in the Gaelic (Ait
Ti Chathail) meaning Cathal's Dwelling Place.
To-day Bog Rd., Livens Rd., Island Rd., & Atticall Rd. run through
the townland.
In 1305 Atticall in the ancient Kingdom of Moume was in the hands of
the Anglo-Norman Richard de Burgh (the Red Earl) In 1505 it was
granted to Gerald 8th Earl of Kildare. More recently those attached
to Kilmorey Estate hold the title Earl of Kilmorey.
